What has changed

Why getting from Vienna airport into town works differently in 2026

Rail connections between the airport and the centre are restricted because of a major construction project. According to Wiener Linien (as of November 2026), the main S-Bahn line between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof is closed from 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027, and Wien Mitte (Landstrasse) station is affected too.

For travellers this means: the S7 currently ends at St. Marx, the City Airport Train runs as a bus, and Vienna Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) becomes the most important interchange for rail passengers. According to Vienna Airport, ÖBB long-distance trains from Hauptbahnhof to the airport and the Vienna Airport Bus lines run without restrictions.

Timetables may change during the works, so check your connection with the operators shortly before you travel.

City Airport Train

CAT replacement bus 2026: premium coaches instead of the train to Wien Mitte

During the works the City Airport Train does not run on rails but by bus. According to cityairporttrain.com (as of November 2026), premium buses run between Wien Mitte and the airport from 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027. Because of a fire at Praterstern, the bus service started earlier, on 24 August 2026, with up to five departures per hour in each direction.

According to the operator, buses run every 12 minutes between 7 am and 7 pm and every 15 minutes at other times. The first departure from Wien Mitte is at 05:30 and the last at 23:15. At the airport the buses stop at Terminal 3, bus bay 0, with the first departure at 06:10 and the last at 23:37.

Suitcases can be taken on board, but large items such as skis or bicycles cannot. City check-in at Wien Mitte is suspended while the bus service operates.

Rail and bus

S7 Vienna airport, ÖBB long-distance trains and Vienna Airport Bus

Besides the CAT bus there are several public connections. The following information comes from the operators (as of November 2026); journey times vary by connection and are shown in the current timetables.

Taxi and app

Vienna airport taxi or Uber – which is the better fit?

A taxi or ride-hailing app takes you to your destination without changing, but they charge differently. A taxi from the rank usually runs on the meter, so the total depends on route, traffic and waiting time. With app services such as Uber you see a price before ordering, which can vary with demand and time of day.

Which option is cheaper cannot be said in general. At peak times, in bad weather or at night the picture can change quickly. We deliberately do not quote day-to-day prices here, because they change constantly.

A third option is a pre-booked airport taxi at a fixed price: the price is agreed before your trip, and the driver is already waiting in the arrivals hall.
