Hallstatt private tour from Vienna: what to expect in the village

Hallstatt sits on the western shore of Lake Hallstatt and is part of the Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut UNESCO World Heritage region. The centre is small and easy to explore on foot, with houses squeezed between mountain and water.

Vehicles park on the edge of the village, a few minutes’ walk from the centre. The chauffeur drops you as close as possible and waits until you return. Allow extra time for the salt mine and the viewpoint above the village. Up-to-date information is available on hallstatt.net.

In summer Hallstatt is very busy. An early start, or a visit in spring or autumn, makes the day more pleasant. Please note that the chauffeur drives you and is not a tour guide.

Train, tour bus or private car from Vienna to Hallstatt?

Hallstatt can be reached from Vienna by train, but you have to change, and the station is on the opposite shore of the lake, so the last stretch is by boat. For a day trip that makes the timing tight.

Organised coach tours are cheaper, but follow a fixed programme with many other passengers. With your own driver you decide on departure, breaks and time on site, and the fixed price per vehicle divides up well for families and small groups.

For larger groups we offer the minibus with driver with up to 21 seats. More excursions from Vienna are collected under sightseeing tours and day trips.

As a day trip with a return to Vienna, that becomes very long. A better option is a private driver from Vienna to Salzburg with a stop in Hallstatt and an overnight stay in Salzburg, which turns the journey into a relaxed travel day.

Yes. Hallstatt in the snow is particularly atmospheric. Expect shorter days and, depending on the weather, a longer drive. In snow and ice we plan in more buffer so that nobody has to rush.
